80,000 Hours

80,000 Hours

You are no doubt wondering a bit about that title ”80,000 Hours”, well, that is the average number of hours that you will work in your lifetime. It’s a bit of a scary number isn’t it?

Ben and Will, graduates from Oxford /university found themselves thinking about this big number, and in the position of many students and graduates, in being unsure of what path to take in their careers. Having some insight into issues facing the World, and knowing they wanted to make a difference, they founded a nonprofit organisation, 80,000 Hours.

At 80,000 Hours they believe that your career is the biggest opportunity you will have to make a positive impact on the World. That average of 80,000 hours spent on your career, you have a significant amount of time to make a meaningful difference. 80,000 Hours aim is to help you find a career that is not only fulfilling and pays the bills, but also creates a positive impact on society.

Ben and Will recognised that finding the right career path is a critical decision, and they wanted to provide research and support to help students and recent graduates find their best path. Through 80,000 Hours they are able to do just that, conducting research alongside academics at Oxford, 80,000 Hours has discovered many ways to rethink social impact careers. For instance, most people think that to make a difference they need to work at a Charity, but this is not necessarily the optimal way for a person to have the most impact. Every individual is of course different, and they bring their own life experiences, skills and knowledge, so for many there may be a more unconventional career path that could yield more results and provide a better way to focus your time, energy and skills rather than into an area that is already over saturated.

Millions of people have read their advice, which is transparent and best of all free! Although their central aims are focused on those 18 to 30 years old, much of their advice and resources have universal application, so if you are a bit older and want to make a change then check out the 80,000 Hours site.

Of course this is all very noble but not everyone is going to be in a position to take their careers down this type of route, but if you’re lucky enough to have the security and ability to make helping the world one of your main goals, 80,000 Hours we can help.
